Heritage & Historical Restoration Process

We take great pride in working on heritage and historically significant stained glass and leadlight projects throughout Australia. Our studio is approved to work with government bodies, heritage councils, and trust groups across all states, and we specialise in the careful restoration and preservation of Australia’s treasured glass artworks.

From historic churches and heritage-listed government buildings to significant residential homes, we value every opportunity to restore and protect these remarkable works of art. Each project is approached with respect for traditional craftsmanship, historical integrity, and long-term preservation.

Documentation & Historical Records

Every stage of our heritage restoration process is thoroughly documented. We provide detailed written reports supported by photographic and video records, which are presented for reference and retained as part of the historical archive. These records can be accessed at any time upon request.

Removal & Transport

Stained glass and leadlight panels are carefully assessed prior to removal. Each panel is safely removed from its location, professionally packed, and transported to one of our studios where restoration is undertaken under controlled conditions.

Design Tracing & Templating

Depending on the style and period of the panel, traditional techniques are used to trace and template the original leadline design. These templates are hand-drawn and retained on file as part of our permanent documentation and future reference.

Cleaning & Dismantling

The panel is soaked to gently clean the glass and soften the original putty or cement within the lead cane. Once prepared, the panel is carefully dismantled, with each individual piece of glass placed in sequence. The original lead is safely disposed of.

Excess cement and putty is removed, and each piece of glass is individually cleaned and assessed. Where traditional painted glass is present, specialised tools and conservation-approved techniques are used to carefully remove surface deposits without damaging the artwork.

Assessment, Repair & Client Consultation

Any broken or damaged glass is presented to the client before proceeding. Restoration options are discussed on a piece-by-piece basis, ensuring decisions around preservation, repair, or replacement are made collaboratively and respectfully.

Releading & Structural Reinforcement

Using the original hand-drawn template, the stained glass leadlight is rebuilt using traditional methods with new lead cane. The option to include reinforcing strips is discussed with the client for each panel. When used, these are discreetly positioned within the lead cane between the glass to provide added strength and durability without altering the visual integrity of the design. This significantly extends the lifespan of the panel while maintaining its historical character.

Sealing & Finishing

Once rebuilt, the panel is sealed and strengthened using traditional putty or cement if preferred. It is then limed, cleaned, hand-polished, and buffed to finish.

Reinstallation

Upon completion, the stained glass leadlight is ready for reinstallation. Removal and installation are coordinated with heritage builders and architects where required. We strongly recommend supervising both removal and reinstallation to ensure safety and preservation standards are upheld.
